Last night I tackled the project of a 35mm version of my medium format pinhole Lego camera. It turned out to be easier than I expected. I should probably have spent the time making better instructions for the medium format version, but rest assured, those are in the works. Anyway, here are a couple highlights of this camera's design that are different from the medium format version...

1. Obviously it is smaller than the medium format Lego camera. Here is a picture that shows the size comparison:

2. The film advance is the same in that the advance knob can only turn one direction. Since we don't have the spools of 120 film to worry about, the film just winds around the thin Lego axle. I used a Dremmel tool to cut a thin slice out of the axle. The film goes through this slit when you first load the film. Here is a photo of how the film loads. You can see that I haven't painted the inside black, yet. The silver is the aluminum tape I use for lightproofing it:

3. Again, there are two parts to the camera. The second part just encloses the inside box to keep light out. Here is a view where you can see both parts:

The medium format version had a red window to help tell what frame you are on. Obviously 35mm film doesn't have numbers on it or backing paper, so a red window doesn't belong on this camera. So how do you tell what frame you are on? This is probably the biggest drawback of this camera. You will have to count the clicks of the advance knob and guess when you are on the next frame. At the beginning of the roll it takes around 38 clicks and when you get to the end of the roll it only takes about 22 clicks. I might have to rethink a better film counter method, but this works for now.

4. The shutter is a little different on this camera. I made a door that swings open when you turn the knob. I don't love this design either, but it works pretty well.

5. Now in color! Partly because I am running out of black Legos, I had a little fun and made this one red and blue.

6. A couple other things to consider. There isn't a rewind mechanism, so when you get to your last frame, you will have to take it into a dark room and rewind it by hand. Maybe I can figure out a way to make a rewind knob, but I can't think of anything right now.

As you can see, I still want to tinker with this camera a bit. That means there will probably be a delay before I make instructions available. On the bright side, I have completed building the medium format version in Bricksmith and plan on making them available very soon.

UPDATE 1: Thanks for everyone's comments, and sorry for forgetting a link to my [Lego photo gallery](http://www.foundphotography.com/archives/lego/). Follow that link to see thumbnails of all the photos taken with my Lego cameras. The color photos were taken with the 35mm Lego camera and most of the other ones were taken with the medium format version.
UPDATE 2: I have posted the Bricksmith files for anyone interested in building the medium format version of this camera. The film advance works the same on that camera, so anyone trying to attempt building this 35mm version may find it useful.

MUSIC A.M. - Unwound From The Wood

MUSIC A.M. - Unwound From The Wood

“An alternative indie supergroup – Music A.M is a band comprised of Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka), Stefan Schneider (of To Rococo Rot and Mapstation) and quite surprisingly Luke Sutherland from 90s indie depression-peddlers Long Fin Killie. As I’m sure you can imagine, this is prime quality stuff from the outset – with the focus clearly on high quality electronic pop. Much like Lali Puna, Styrofoam and of course To Rococo Rot, Music A.M. have a gorgeously well defined sound, with Sutherland’s beautiful vocals adding a pastoral edge. It reminds me of the best bits of dreamy pop, shoegazer era but with knobs on, if you will. Lovely, friendly and warm – ‘Unwound From the Wood’ is a little gem of a record.”

Urban views. “The things that we say change us. We change the things that we see. Things get mixed up. Shapes change… Our thoughts about what we have seen are not fixed: we play with them constantly.” In designing his room, Bus concentrated on doing what he says he always does: “Making people understand that we can’t understand anything. That means, in this space for example, that the process of drawing has a random beginning and a random end – in between is unknown territory. Once you let go of form and yourself then everything is free.”

Kim Hiorthøy – Norway: The wit and intelligence of the work of young Norwegian designer, artist, musician, film-maker and photographer Kim Hiorthøy marks him out as being one of a very special kind. Regardless of what medium he chooses, he manages to pack narratives of great intricacy and depth into his very personal and reduced visual or written language. From the Nordic colour cosmos of his record sleeves to his poetic and often humorous drawings or photos, Hiorthøy erases the line between design and art with accomplished ease.

    309. Clubs – The Secret Palace

    ROOM INFO

Feeling special. Container came up with a royal theme for their four rooms “to emphasise the feeling of being special that one gets when one stays in a hotel.” They also based their rooms on the four suites in a pack of cards. Room 309 is clubs: “FOXy deep red paints and fabrics mixed with a dark and sultry palette makes this a seductive and sophisticated room. It is designed to intoxicate and relax – like a nightclub with beautiful sexy princess women, party-divas, and men who look like clowns.”

    ARTIST INFO

Container – United Kingdom: The illustrations of the London designers Nicola Carter and Luise Vormittag who call themselves “Container” are playful, romantic and atmospheric. Their collaged collaborations of photographs and ink drawing are very three-dimensional in that they “grow” across floors and walls like multi-dimensional fairy tales that have escaped from their books. Container have published in magazines such as Elle and The Face and their first interior designs were for the London department store Selfridges.

    406. Shortcut

    ROOM INFO

Shape and size. Manuel designed Room 406: “This is about fascination with shapes and their infinite variety. I'm surrounded by giant vases. I'm 30 cm tall. The vases become parts of a futuristic flying machine. Some objects seem to be mythological symbols, mysterious animals. Shaped mirrors become the doors to this world of legends.”

Antoine et Manuel - France: The Parisian duo Antoine Audiau and Manuel Warosz call themselves “image directors” and they work a lot in the world of fashion (Antoine) and product design (Manuel). They are best known for their designs for labels such as Lacroix and Habitat as well as their shop displays for Lafayette Maison in Paris.
Designing hotel rooms was something they both wanted to do for some time. Antoine et Manuel would like their guests to “be inspired” by their rooms “and have a new experience. We hope these rooms are doors to their own dream worlds.”

    409. Heidi

    ROOM INFO

Amazement. Being Swiss, Güdel decided to use the ultimate kitsch literary theme for his rooms: The story of Heidi by Johanna Spyri.
“If you come from Switzerland, like me, you always have at least one grandfather who was a farmer...” he says. “The child sat without moving, her eyes taking in the whole scene, and all around was a great stillness...” Johanna Spyri

    411. Stadtspuren Kopenhagen

    ROOM INFO

Urban culture. In Copenhagen Zasd has taken his impressions of the city literally and brought them into this room. “Normally I come and tag the place – I leave something. Now I’m taking the city’s tag, its imprint with me. I’m stealing a structure surface to implant into my own style.” Zasd hopes his room will inspire one or two guests to “move around the city, maybe visit the spots where I got my fill-ins and see it with their own eyes, hear it with their own ears, smell it. Just to open up their perception.”

    ARTIST INFO

Akim Zasd Bus/ Zasd - Germany: Berlin-based Akim, Zasd and Bus 126 are a group of “writers” coming from a street art background. Their process-oriented work reflects their origins. Zasd works mainly outdoors creating 3D forms, “writing” and doing performances that combine “writing” with music. His experience of working on interiors includes trains, tunnels, buildings of every kind, galleries and museums.

    414. Complexity - reliability

    ROOM INFO

Form and function. E-Types are also conscious of their pedagogic duties and hope that a stay in their rooms will make their guests think and reflect upon the different issues embedded in the design.
“The old rule of thumb does still exist: Never trust statistics with unnamed sources. Strive to create your own understanding of the data, and question causalities. Design is, and will always be a content-driven business… We’re all in the business of making sense.”

    ARTIST INFO

E-Types – Denmark: This Copenhagen brand agency has firmly made its mark on the Danish design scene. Their graphic design style is quite purist and an interesting blend of text and typography. E-Types are the functional scientists amongst the Hotel FOX artists and revel in the cool, sober discipline of their room designs.

    508. Authentic Mythical Creatures are Excellent Value for One’s Money

    ROOM INFO

Talking about values. Hort see creating a hotel room as a responsibility: “Someone is going to live in this room for a while, they are going to breathe the atmosphere more intensely than someone just visiting like at an exhibition. The idea was to create modern mythical creatures that function like fables or tales that give a polemic viewpoint to everyday lives. Each illustration tells its own story to the viewer. It is the visitor that brings the different fragments together and builds his own story from them.”

    ARTIST INFO

Hort – Germany: Eike König and Martin Lorenz Frankfurt design team Hort has evolved over the past few years into one of Germany’s most successful design agencies internationally. The King and Queen have gathered their magicians, jesters, fortune-tellers and other mystical courtiers to greet you. Blue represents the King's Court and is associated with trust, loyalty and honesty. Also it is the colour of the sky and the deep sea, which suggest infinite freedom.”

Happy is very proud to announce Ephemeral, the new album by Morioka, Japan’s Naoko Sasaki, otherwise known as Piana. Following 2003’s critically acclaimed Snow Bird (almost 3000 cds shipped worldwide) Ephemeral takes Piana’s sound into a new, more acoustic, terrain. Shedding some of the glitch aesthetics that made Snow Bird a genre-defying “micro-pop” release, Ephemeral shows Piana’s strength as a songwriter and arranger, and a master of her electronic and acoustic art. A recent interview conducted with Piana describes the thought processes behind Ephemeral:
